Raised in Southern Illinois, Murphy developed his musical style by blending the influence of outlaw country legends like Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson with the Southern rock sounds of Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, and ZZ Top. After moving to Nashville, he spent years honing his songwriting craft while performing throughout the South before signing with MCA Records under legendary producer Tony Brown.
Murphy’s platinum-selling debut album, Out With A Bang (1994), launched a string of enduring country hits including “Party Crowd,” “Dust on the Bottle,” “Fish Ain’t Bitin’,” “Just Once,” and the title track “Out With A Bang.” “Party Crowd” became one of the most-played songs on country radio in 1995, while “Dust on the Bottle” remains one of country music’s most recognizable anthems. He followed with successful albums including Gettin’ Out the Good Stuff, We Can’t All Be Angels, and Tryin’ to Get There, which produced additional fan favorites such as “Every Time I Get Around You,” “The Road You Leave Behind,” and the Top 5 hit “Loco.”
In addition to his success as a recording artist, Murphy has become one of Nashville’s premier hit songwriters. His songs have been recorded by Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Keith Urban, Jake Owen, Thompson Square, Florida Georgia Line, Brooks & Dunn, Reba McEntire, and many others. His songwriting credits include major country hits such as “Living in Fast Forward,” “Big Green Tractor,” “Anywhere With You,” “The More I Drink,” and the Grammy-winning “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright.”
After stepping away from recording for several years to focus on songwriting, Murphy returned with the acclaimed 2018 album No Zip Code, produced alongside longtime friend Kenny Chesney and Buddy Cannon. The album featured the chart-topping duet “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” which earned Murphy his first CMA Award for Musical Event of the Year and reintroduced him to a new generation of country fans.
In 2023, Murphy was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in recognition of a remarkable career that has spanned decades as both an artist and songwriter. With millions of records sold, countless industry honors, and a catalog of songs woven into the fabric of country music, David Lee Murphy continues to captivate audiences with authentic storytelling, timeless songwriting, and unforgettable live performances.
